Labour Suspends Planned Strike, Signs Agreement With FG

Newsie Events:-
Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has temporarily suspended its planned nationwide strike scheduled to start today, Monday, September 28, after reaching an agreement with the Federal Government.
Earlier, there has been a plea by the Federal government, requesting the organised labour to abandon the scheduled nationwide protest which was to press on government to revert the hike in pump price of fuel and electricity tariff.
The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, announced the suspension in a statement released at 2:55 am via his Twitter page on Monday.
He stated on his verified Twitter handle(@fkeyamo): “Still negotiating with labour at exactly 12.34 am. Some progress has been made. Concrete proposals on the table from both sides.
“Details being worked on by the temporary Secretariat. Gradually moving towards a point of convergence. Let’s hope….”

But Keyamo later said the unions agreed to call off the strike after the federal government also agreed to suspend the electricity tariff hike for two weeks.
He said, “the federal government and labour reach agreement at 2:53 am. Deregulation to stay as government rolls out palliatives for labour (details in 2 weeks); Electricity tariffs suspended by govt for 2 weeks with a joint committee headed by @fkeyamo to examine the justification for the new policy. Strike suspended.”
A five-page communique announcing the suspension of the strike was signed by the presidents of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba; and the Trade Union Congress counterpart TUC, Quadri Olaleye, amongst others, on behalf of the organised labour.

Signing for the federal government was the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige; the Minister of State Petroleum, Timipre Silva; the Minister of State Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo; the Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed; and the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, amongst others.
