The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has voiced strong concern over what it sees as an imbalance in land ownership rights across Nigeria.
During a Board of Trustees meeting in Kaduna, ACF BOT chairman, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu, pointed out that while southerners are able to acquire land and property with ease in the North, northerners often face restrictions and outright denial when trying to do the same in the South—particularly in the Southeast.
Dalhatu emphasized the need for urgent reforms in land ownership laws across the 19 northern states.
According to him, such changes are essential to protect indigenous northern communities and prevent their lands from being taken over by outsiders.
“It’s unfortunate that the North’s long-standing openness and hospitality towards Nigerians from other regions have not been reciprocated,” he said.
“In many parts of the South, especially the Southeast, it’s nearly impossible for a northerner to legally acquire land, let alone own substantial property.”
Dalhatu also sounded the alarm about increasing foreign interest in northern lands, warning that this “mad scramble” could threaten the region’s sovereignty if left unchecked.
He urged northern governors and lawmakers to take swift legislative action to safeguard the region’s land rights.
He further noted a growing frustration in the North over perceived marginalisation, with some people beginning to question the continued relevance of Nigeria’s unity.
The ACF also condemned the mistreatment of northerners in the South, claiming that even innocent travelers are sometimes attacked or killed without consequence.
Dalhatu criticised successive governments for failing to address these incidents and called on the federal government to urgently review the laws governing land use and national unity.
