In a bold push for fairness, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has called on the European Union and the United Kingdom to refund visa fees for all rejected Zambian applicants, arguing that it’s unjust for citizens to lose money over unsuccessful applications.
Speaking on Friday, May 23, 2025, President Hichilema didn’t mince words, highlighting the financial strain placed on Zambians who apply for visas—only to be turned down without explanation. Whether for education, tourism, or business, many Zambians face steep application fees that ultimately lead nowhere.
“Why should our people pay hefty fees just to be denied entry?” the President asked, insisting that visa fees should be charged only when applications are approved. “It’s unacceptable that our citizens lose significant sums of money on unsuccessful applications.”
The message, first reported by Block TV, has stirred international conversation around what many see as outdated and one-sided visa practices. Hichilema’s demand points to a broader issue: the opaque and sometimes rigid nature of global visa policies, where the financial risk is shouldered almost entirely by the applicant.
While the UK does offer some refunds on immigration and nationality applications, these typically exclude standard visa denials. The EU’s policy on refunding rejected applications remains vague—something that may soon face scrutiny if Hichilema’s challenge gains momentum.
The proposal has divided opinion. Supporters view it as a necessary move toward more equitable travel rules. Skeptics, however, question whether such refunds are logistically or politically realistic.
As Zambia awaits a formal response from London and Brussels, one thing is clear: President Hichilema has reignited a global debate about who should really foot the bill when borders stay closed.
