A deadly attack rocked the Yelewata community in Benue State on Friday night, as suspected armed herdsmen unleashed violence around 10:00 p.m., resulting in multiple casualties and widespread panic.

Preliminary reports received in the early hours of Saturday indicate that at least 16 individuals sustained various injuries during the assault. The full death toll remains uncertain as authorities continue recovery and investigation efforts in the area.

Security forces responding to the distress call—including personnel from the Nigerian Army and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were ambushed in Daudu while en route to Yelewata. The ambush led to the tragic deaths of two soldiers and one Civil Defence officer.

“These brave men paid the ultimate price in service to our people. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” a local community member said, mourning the loss.

Injured survivors are currently receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi. Medical staff have issued an urgent call for blood donations, emphasizing the critical condition of several patients.

Humanitarian groups and concerned citizens are being urged to offer immediate aid, particularly in the form of medical supplies and blood support.

“Our thoughts are with the victims’ families, especially our fallen heroes in uniform,” a resident shared, adding that they had refrained from distributing graphic images out of respect for the community.
