The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, is facing mounting opposition over his speculated third-term ambition to continue representing the Abak State Constituency beyond 2027.
A growing wave of political stakeholders, particularly from the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, have reportedly rejected the speaker’s re-election bid. This backlash is tied to his perceived role in supporting a controversial bill that many have described as discriminatory toward the people of Ikot Ekpene the senatorial district of Senate President, Chief Godswill Akpabio.
A source closely linked to the leadership of the Itai Afe Annang a prominent socio-political organization disclosed to our reporter under condition of anonymity that the group has resolved to boycott all political activities linked to Speaker Otong’s 2027 aspirations.
The source claimed that the speaker’s legislative performance has fallen below expectations and accused him of misconduct, further deepening the resentment against his candidacy. The failed bill, which was allegedly intended to classify people of the Ikot Ekpene district as “second-class citizens,” has become a significant stain on Otong’s record, even though it never made it into law.
According to the insider, the Itai Afe Annang views Otong’s third-term ambition as unjustifiable and inconsistent with the principles of equity, fairness, and inclusiveness, especially within the Annang socio-political framework.
As the 2027 election season approaches, political tensions continue to rise within Akwa Ibom State, signaling a potentially turbulent road ahead for the Speaker’s political future.
