John Chuma Nwosu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate in the upcoming Anambra governorship election, has formally committed to serving only one term in office if elected.
Nwosu, who hails from Nnewi in Anambra South Senatorial Zone—the same zone as the incumbent Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo—visited the High Court in Awka on Thursday, where he swore an affidavit to that effect. Governor Soludo, also from Anambra South (Isuofia in Aguata LGA), is currently seeking re-election for a second term.
This move by Nwosu is seen as aligning with the state’s informal zoning arrangement, which rotates the governorship among Anambra’s three senatorial districts. By pledging to serve just four years, Nwosu says he aims to complete the tenure allotted to Anambra South before the seat shifts to another zone.
Describing the affidavit as a symbol of integrity and commitment, Nwosu stated that governance should be about service, not self-interest.
“I didn’t enter this race to rule, but to serve,” Nwosu said after signing the affidavit. “I’ve made this commitment publicly before, and today I have sealed it legally. Four years is more than enough to make a meaningful impact if the leadership is focused and sincere.”
His action has drawn praise from some quarters as a courageous step that promotes accountability and sets a high ethical standard for political office seekers.
