Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, triumphing over several high-profile figures, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had publicly campaigned for the award.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the decision on October 10, 2025, praising Machado for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes described her as “a brave and committed champion of peace,” emphasizing that her award was primarily for her leadership in advancing democracy in Venezuela—a country long plagued by political repression under President Nicolás Maduro’s rule.
Machado, an industrial engineer turned politician, has been one of the most vocal critics of Venezuela’s authoritarian government. Over the years, she has faced arrests, travel bans, and political disqualification, yet remained a key figure in the opposition. She leads the Vente Venezuela party and co-founded Soy Venezuela, a coalition of pro-democracy movements.
Born in Caracas in 1967, she first gained prominence after founding the Atenea Foundation to support street children, and later the Súmate organization, which monitored elections and advocated for electoral transparency. In 2010, she was elected to Venezuela’s National Assembly with record votes, but was expelled in 2014 by Maduro’s government.
The Nobel Committee also highlighted that democracy worldwide is in decline, warning that the right to free expression and fair elections remains the bedrock of peace.
Meanwhile, Frydnes clarified that Donald Trump’s campaign for the Nobel Prize had no influence on the committee’s decision. Analysts say the award underscores substance over publicity—recognizing long-term dedication to peace and democratic reform rather than short-term political efforts.
Machado, responding to the announcement, called the prize “an honor for every Venezuelan who still believes in liberty and peace.”
The award ceremony will take place on December 10, 2025, in Oslo, Norway, marking a historic moment for Venezuela’s pro-democracy movement—and a symbolic win over powerful global contenders like Trump.
