The Nigeria Police Force has arraigned Nnamdi Kanu’s legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, his brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and ten other individuals in court following a protest held in Abuja on Monday demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader.
The charges, which include incitement, disruption of public peace, and disobedience to a court order, were made public through court documents shared by former Chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Nigeria, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, via X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.
According to the charge sheet, the group is accused of obstructing the free movement of citizens and disrupting traffic by chanting slogans and singing war songs during the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television, confirmed the arrests and stated that they were made for attempting to breach restricted areas. He noted that a total of eight people were arrested around the Transcorp Hilton area of Abuja.
“They insisted on entering restricted areas despite warnings, so they were arrested alongside six others,” Hundeyin said. “They are currently at the State CID. We made it clear that anyone who defies the court order will be arrested, investigated, and prosecuted.”
Hundeyin confirmed that investigations were concluded swiftly and charges were filed within 24 hours
