In a major boost to power infrastructure development, the Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and Chairman, House Committee on Public Procurement, Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem, has donated 25 units of 500KVA/33KV line transformers to communities across the federal constituency.
The donation, carried out earlier today, covers all 24 wards within Ukanafun and Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, with each ward receiving one transformer, while an additional unit serves as backup. The intervention fulfills a commitment made by Rt. Hon. Idem to his constituents towards the end of 2025 to restore electricity to communities that have suffered a total collapse of power infrastructure and prolonged blackout spanning over five years, particularly in Ukanafun Local Government Area.
Originally planned for Ukanafun alone within a 90-day timeline, the project was strategically expanded to include sister communities in Oruk Anam Local Government Area, necessitating a short delay to accommodate the entire federal constituency. The delay was also due to the procurement and delivery of the 500KVA/33KV transformers, which offer significantly higher capacity, wider distribution coverage, improved insulation, and greater efficiency compared to the smaller 300KVA/11KV transformers typically used for limited domestic supply.
With delivery now completed, installation and electrification works are set to commence immediately across affected communities in the constituency.
To ensure effective implementation, Rt. Hon. Idem has constituted two committees — an Implementation Committee and a Security Committee — both drawn from all 24 wards of the constituency.
The Implementation Committee, chaired by Obong James Ekekere, is mandated to take delivery of the transformers for their respective wards and liaise with community leaders to determine suitable installation locations.
Similarly, the Security Committee, chaired by Deacon Ndianabasi Udom, will establish ward-level security teams comprising nominees from village councils and youth leadership structures. These teams will be responsible for safeguarding transformers and other electricity infrastructure against vandalism and theft.
For emphasis, constituents have been informed that installation and connection will begin immediately in communities where power infrastructure had completely collapsed, while other areas will be covered in phases, with a firm commitment that all 24 wards will ultimately be connected to the national grid.
The electrification project, officially tagged “Rep. Unyime Idem Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency Electricity Restoration Initiative,” marks another significant milestone in Rt. Hon. Idem’s infrastructure-driven representation, reinforcing his pledge to deliver sustainable development and improved quality of life for his constituents
