The Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has hosted a one-day capacity-building workshop to enhance the professional competence of its members and strengthen ethical journalism practices.

The training, themed “News Gathering Techniques for Professional Journalists,” brought together practicing journalists from various chapels across the state. The session focused on modern reporting strategies, effective storytelling, and the need to uphold high professional standards in an increasingly complex media environment.

Addressing participants, the Chairman of the NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, stressed that fairness, objectivity, and professionalism remain the bedrock of credible journalism. He urged media practitioners to stay committed to truth, balance, and accuracy, noting that public confidence in the media depends largely on adherence to ethical standards.

Comrade John described journalism as a constantly evolving profession that requires continuous learning and adaptation to sustain its watchdog role in society. He applauded the leadership of the Federated Chapel, under Comrade Bassey Ibiatisuho, for initiating the workshop and encouraged participants to maximise the opportunity to refine their skills.

Delivering the keynote lecture, Professor Ndaeyo Uko, a Professor of Narrative Journalism, highlighted the importance of contemporary storytelling techniques and strategic questioning in today’s media practice. He observed that journalists face growing challenges from misinformation and distorted narratives, emphasizing that rebuilding public trust requires intentional, well-structured questioning that elicits meaningful and impactful responses.

In his remarks, Chapel Chairman Comrade Bassey Ibiatisuho expressed appreciation to the resource person for the enlightening presentation and reaffirmed the chapel’s commitment to continuous professional development for its members.

The workshop also drew participants from sister chapels, fostering unity within the union and reinforcing the media’s role as a critical partner in societal growth and development.
