Police in Meerut have uncovered what appears to be a wide-reaching cyber fraud operation, with a Nigerian student at the center of the investigation.
The suspect, Saifu Mayana Umar, an MSc Nursing student, was taken into custody following a coordinated probe. Authorities say victims from different parts of India were lured with promises of high returns tied to foreign investments and stock trading schemes.
As the investigation unfolded, links began to surface. Umar, along with alleged associates including another Nigerian national identified as Yusuf, is now connected to at least 16 fraud cases.
According to police, the group operated through a structured network. Funds transferred by victims were quickly routed through multiple bank accounts and withdrawn via ATMs, a method believed to reduce the chances of detection. Officials estimate that around ₹45 lakh passed through Umar’s account, with most cases traced back to southern states.
The arrest itself followed joint efforts between cybercrime teams from Telangana and Tamil Nadu, working alongside local police in Meerut. Umar was eventually apprehended at his hostel.
Search operations led to the seizure of several items, including electronic devices, ATM cards, bank documents, a SIM card, passport, cheque book, and mobile phones. These materials have been sent for forensic analysis as investigators attempt to map the broader network.
There were also signs of attempted cover-up. One associate is believed to have tried destroying banking documents, though some records were successfully recovered. Authorities are now tracking transaction trails, including possible international links.
During questioning, Umar reportedly admitted that some funds in his account were deposited by Yusuf and later withdrawn. Investigators say more names have surfaced, and further action, including international cooperation, may follow.
For now, Umar has been released on notice. His passport has been seized, and he has been restricted to his university hostel as the investigation continues.
