The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, has called for the strengthening of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) across states to deepen the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

He made this call on Thursday, March 26, 2026, during the ongoing ICPC/NUJ workshop on reinvigorating the National Anti-Corruption Strategy held in Abuja.

Comrade John stressed that the success of anti-corruption efforts largely depends on the strength and visibility of institutions at the grassroots. According to him, enhancing the operational capacity of ICPC offices in states will improve access for citizens, encourage public participation, and promote greater accountability in governance.

He also emphasized the need for continuous training and retraining of ICPC personnel, noting that professionalism and effective engagement with the public are key to building trust and sustaining the anti-corruption campaign. He added that well-trained personnel would be better equipped to collaborate with stakeholders and address corruption-related issues more efficiently.

The NUJ Chairman further highlighted the importance of synergy between the media and anti-corruption agencies. He noted that journalists remain vital in exposing corrupt practices and driving accountability, and called for stronger collaboration to improve transparency and good governance nationwide.

Comrade John also commended Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, National President of the NUJ, for promoting strategic partnerships between the union and anti-corruption bodies. He described the collaboration as timely and impactful in advancing Nigeria’s anti-corruption objectives.

In his response, the ICPC Chairman outlined the Commission’s operational framework and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the media and other stakeholders. He assured participants of sustained cooperation, enhanced capacity building, and stronger partnerships aimed at improving transparency, accountability, and corruption prevention across the country.

The workshop is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the role of the media in supporting Nigeria’s National Anti-Corruption Strategy and fostering good governance.
