The Senate has cautioned Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, over his reported call for a United Nations (UN) probe into the abduction of schoolchildren and their principal in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
The caution was issued following a motion moved by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, who expressed concerns that Governor Makinde was taking what he described as a domestic political crisis too far by seeking international intervention.
According to Oshiomhole, issues relating to insecurity and criminal activities within Nigeria should primarily be addressed through the country’s established security and judicial institutions rather than being internationalized prematurely.
He argued that involving the United Nations in the matter could project Nigeria in a negative light and undermine ongoing efforts by security agencies to tackle kidnapping and related crimes across the country.
The senator maintained that while the abduction of the schoolchildren and their principal remains a serious concern that deserves urgent attention, political leaders must exercise caution in their public statements and actions to avoid escalating the situation beyond the nation’s borders.
The Senate’s position underscores the need for collaboration among all levels of government in addressing security challenges while preserving Nigeria’s sovereignty and confidence in its institutions.
The abduction incident in Oriire has generated widespread concern among Nigerians, with calls for strengthened security measures to ensure the safety of students and educational institutions across the country.
