The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has honoured one of its former leaders, Comrade Israel Umoh, by naming the conference room at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo, after him.
The recognition was announced by the State Chairman of the union, Comrade Nsibiet John, during a ceremony held shortly after the State Congress at the NUJ Press Centre on Tuesday.
Speaking at the unveiling of the newly designated Comrade Israel Umoh Conference Room, Comrade Nsibiet John said the honour was in appreciation of Umoh’s immense contributions to the growth and development of the union during his tenure as Chairman between 2004 and 2007.
According to the NUJ Chairman, the current administration remains committed to preserving the history of the union by celebrating individuals whose dedication and leadership have left lasting footprints in the journalism profession.
He described Comrade Umoh as a visionary leader who played a significant role in strengthening the structures of the union and promoting the welfare of journalists across Akwa Ibom State.
“Exceptional service deserves recognition. It is important that we celebrate those who have made enduring contributions while they are still with us to witness and appreciate the honour. Comrade Israel Umoh’s legacy continues to inspire journalists across the state,” Nsibiet John stated.
Responding, an emotional Comrade Israel Umoh expressed gratitude to the State Chairman, members of the State Working Committee (SWC), State Executive Council (SEC), and the entire membership of the union for what he described as an unexpected but deeply meaningful gesture.
He pledged his continued support for the advancement of the NUJ and commended the present leadership for fostering a culture of appreciation and preserving the institutional memory of the organisation.
Umoh also prayed for Comrade Nsibiet John and members of his administration, asking God to grant them wisdom, good health, and a successful tenure marked by unity and progress within the union.
The event was attended by members of the State Working Committee, State Executive Council, former and serving union leaders, and journalists from various chapels across the state, who described the honour as a fitting recognition of dedicated and exemplary service.
