Police operatives have reportedly fired tear gas to disperse participants, including Lagos State governorship candidates Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Funso Doherty, during a memorial event marking the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS shootings at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos.
Rhodes-Vivour is the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while Doherty represents the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
A video obtained by DAILY POST showed police officers firing tear gas at the gathering as participants assembled at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday to honour victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests.
The two political candidates had joined other participants in a wreath-laying ceremony organised to remember those affected by the incident.
The memorial procession was organised by the Enough is Enough Movement as part of activities commemorating six years since the shooting that became one of the most controversial episodes of the nationwide protests against police brutality.
The development comes amid renewed calls for justice, accountability and respect for human rights as Nigerians reflect on the events of October 2020.
Further details surrounding the police action and the circumstances leading to the firing of tear gas were not immediately available.
