The Rivers State Government has inspected the site of a recent gas pipeline explosion in Aleto community, Eleme Local Government Area, following reports of injuries and damage to properties.
The inspection team, comprising officials from the Ministries of Energy and Natural Resources, and Environment, visited the affected area to assess the level of destruction and sympathise with residents impacted by the incident.
Speaking during the visit, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, James Ngochindo, said the findings from the inspection, alongside concerns raised by community members, would be communicated to Governor Siminalayi Fubara and relevant government agencies for necessary action.
Ngochindo also commended residents of Aleto for remaining calm despite the difficulties caused by the explosion.
The incident, which occurred last Thursday, reportedly left several people injured, while buildings and vehicles in the community sustained damage.
The visit provided an opportunity for government officials to hear directly from affected residents and obtain first-hand information about the incident and its impact on the community.
The traditional ruler of Eleme, King Philip Osaro Obele, expressed appreciation to the state government for visiting the affected area and showing concern for the people.
He, however, urged the authorities to give greater “priority to safeguarding the environment and improving infrastructure in the area.”
The monarch’s appeal comes amid concerns about the safety of communities hosting critical energy infrastructure and the need for measures to protect residents, property and the environment.
The state government’s assessment is expected to help inform further action as authorities consider the concerns raised by the affected community.
