The Council Hall of Abak Local Government Area came alive with excitement on Monday, December 15, as the Executive Chairman, Hon. (Mrs.) Ime Effiong Charles, disbursed a total of ₦31.2 million in business grants to 156 beneficiaries from Afaha-Obong and Abak Clans.
The empowerment programme, which attracted community leaders, legislators and beneficiaries, is part of the Chairman’s sustained efforts to strengthen small and medium-scale enterprises and promote financial independence among families in Abak Local Government Area.
Addressing the gathering, Hon. Mrs. Charles explained that the initiative was deliberately designed to stimulate the local economy, reduce poverty and encourage self-reliance at the grassroots. She reaffirmed her administration’s unwavering commitment to people-centred governance and continuous support for enterprising residents of the area.
In a goodwill message, the Clan Head of Afaha-Obong, His Royal Highness Eventus Umoh, speaking on behalf of the clan, expressed profound gratitude to the Chairman for prioritising grassroots empowerment. He described the gesture as timely and impactful, offering prayers for God’s guidance and strength for her administration.
The Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Xavier Timothy, commended the Council Chairman for her outstanding performance, noting that the Legislative Arm remains proud of her people-focused leadership and dedication to the welfare of Abak people.
Similarly, the Village Head of Abak Village, His Highness Ifiok Umanah, praised Hon. Mrs. Charles for her inclusive style of governance and consistent empowerment initiatives, describing her as a leader genuinely committed to grassroots development.
Also speaking, the Deputy Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Michael Udouko, described the programme as well-thought-out, stressing that it would significantly strengthen small businesses and improve the livelihoods of beneficiaries across the two clans.
Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries from Afaha-Obong Clan, Hon. Edet Isonguyo thanked God for the vision and foresight of the Council Chairman. He described the initiative as outstanding and unprecedented in the history of grassroots governance in Abak, assuring that the funds would be judiciously utilised.
Representing beneficiaries from Abak Clan, Miss Precious Emmanson expressed heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Mrs. Charles, noting that the business grant would greatly enhance their ventures and improve their economic stability.
In total, 84 beneficiaries from Abak Clan and 72 beneficiaries from Afaha-Obong Clan each received ₦200,000 as business support, further underscoring the Chairman’s resolve to empower citizens and drive sustainable development at the grassroots level.
