Clifford university suspends officer over sexual harassment allegation involving female student

Clifford University, Owerrinta in Abia State, has suspended a faculty officer, Mr. Obioma Nwogwgwu, over an allegation of sexual harassment involving a 17-year-old female law student.

The allegation was formally reported to the university’s management and the Okpualangwa Divisional Police Headquarters by the Abia State chapter of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation.

In response, the university announced Nwogwgwu’s indefinite suspension effective May 29, 2025. According to the statement issued by the institution, he will face the university’s staff disciplinary committee in the coming days.

“The said Mr. Obioma Nwogwgwu has been placed on an indefinite suspension with effect from May 29, 2025,” the university stated, assuring that due process will be followed.

The institution also clarified that all academic results have been approved by the University Senate and are safely lodged with the Registry. Students with concerns about their results were advised to contact the Registry directly for resolution.

Commending the university for its prompt action, Marvelous Ochiegbu, Director of the Behind Bars Human Rights Foundation in Abia State, emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in handling the case. He urged the university to involve his organization in the investigative process to prevent any cover-up.

Ochiegbu further appealed for protection of the student involved, stressing that she must not face any form of intimidation or victimization.
