Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has emphasized that ensuring safety on the roads is a shared responsibility among all motorists.
The Governor made this known while inaugurating the 2025 Ember Months Road Safety Campaign organized by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) during a town hall meeting in Port Harcourt.
According to a statement issued by Juliana Masi, Head of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Governor Fubara underscored the need for motorists to adopt safe practices not only during the Ember Months but throughout the year.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Benibo Anabraba, Fubara urged drivers to act responsibly and show consideration for other road users.
He said,
“Keeping our roads both on land and at sea safe is a duty that rests on every citizen. It is not limited to the Ember Months but should be part of our daily lives. It is unfortunate that a season meant to celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ has become associated with avoidable road tragedies, requiring additional attention and resources from the FRSC, government agencies, and other stakeholders.”
The Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to developing critical infrastructure across the state and called on residents to remain safety-conscious in their daily activities.
In his remarks, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed noted that the 2025 campaign theme focuses on encouraging all road users to adopt behaviours that protect lives. He explained that Rivers State was chosen for the campaign’s launch due to its significance as one of Nigeria’s busiest transportation hubs.
Presenting crash data, Mohammed revealed that between January and September 2025, Nigeria recorded 7,715 road traffic crashes, a 10.04% increase from 7,011 during the same period in 2024. He also reported that 3,915 people lost their lives in 2025, compared to 3,811 in 2024 an 11.55% rise in fatalities.
However, in Rivers State, road safety indicators showed improvement. Within the same period, 15 deaths and 51 injuries were recorded from 47 crashes, representing a 35.7% decrease in fatalities and a 37.5% drop in injuries compared to 2024.
The Corps Marshal added that the FRSC has enhanced its personnel deployment and intensified public education initiatives to ensure safer roads and more effective service delivery across the country.
