Abia North Senator Orji Uzor-Kalu says he has been making continuous efforts to facilitate a political resolution to the ongoing legal battle involving Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme monitored by Daily Post, Kalu reacted to Kanu’s recent conviction by the Federal High Court in Abuja on terrorism-related charges. The lawmaker revealed that he has been in active discussions with the Federal Government regarding the matter.
He emphasized that Kanu’s situation requires a political rather than purely legal approach, noting:
“The issue of Nnamdi Kanu is one that must be addressed politically. I have been engaging the Federal Government on ways to resolve it, and the judgment delivered by Justice Omotosho should not be questioned.”
Kalu added that while Kanu’s legal team would proceed to the Court of Appeal to challenge the ruling, he plans to reach out to Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi to advise the President on possible steps forward.
The former Abia State governor lamented the economic and human toll linked to IPOB’s activities in the South-East. According to him, many people lost their jobs and means of livelihood, while numerous Igbo lives were cut short as a result of the group’s actions.
Reflecting on past efforts, Kalu disclosed that he had previously lobbied former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2017 to secure Kanu’s release, acknowledging the contributions of Mamman Daura and then–Attorney General Abubakar Malami in making that possible.
“I know the kind of pressure I mounted on President Buhari before Kanu was freed in April 2017. Yet no one talks about the Igbo people who were killed,” he said.
