Wake up and get to work – NUJ tells A’Ibom women affairs commissioner.

By Our Reporter

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has urged the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Inibehe Silas Etukudoh, to rise to her responsibilities over the increasing number of abandoned and vulnerable children roaming the streets of Uyo during school hours and late at night.

The call was made during the Union’s monthly congress, where members expressed deep concern about the growing presence of underage children loitering around Atiku Abubakar Way, Ewet Housing Estate, Itam Under Bridge, and particularly near the main gate of the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Journalists described the situation as disturbing and unacceptable, noting that children of school age are frequently seen wandering the streets at times when they should be in classrooms. They questioned the effectiveness and visibility of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare in tackling child protection and welfare challenges across the state.

According to the Union, leaving vulnerable minors exposed on the streets reflects poorly on the state and signals apparent neglect of statutory responsibilities. Members stressed that child welfare is not a ceremonial obligation but a fundamental mandate of the ministry.

The NUJ warned that continued inaction could worsen social challenges, exposing children to risks such as exploitation, abuse, and criminal activities.

As part of its resolutions, the Union called on the Commissioner to take immediate and decisive steps to address the situation, clear the streets of abandoned children, and ensure they are either returned to school or placed under appropriate care and supervision.
