A distinguished Federal Lawmaker and chairman house committee on public procurement Rt. Hon. Unyime Idem has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Leadership and Strategic Studies from the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State.
The dissertation, titled “Leadership and Nation Building in Nigeria,” critically examined the recurrent governance challenges in the country, particularly the failure of successive administrations to implement inclusive, merit-based leadership practices. Idem new Ph.D holder and member representating Ukanafun federal constituency argued that such leadership deficiencies have significantly hampered Nigeria’s efforts at sustainable nation building.
Among the key recommendations in the study were the formulation of a unified “Nigerian Dream” that transcends ethnic and religious affiliations, adoption of merit-based political appointments, and the strict enforcement of the Federal Character Principle. The scholar also advocated for far-reaching electoral reforms to curb identity-based political mobilization, impartial anti-corruption campaigns, and the promotion of civic education to enhance national consciousness.
During the defense, which drew the attention of senior academic stakeholders, the Supervisor and Provost of the Postgraduate School, Prof. Gbenga Ibileye, alongside other panel members and lecturers, commended the scholar’s in-depth research, intellectual depth, and the quality of presentation. Prof. Ibileye noted that the candidate’s outstanding performance was in line with expectations, given the critical leadership role he currently plays at the national level.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, the newly minted Doctor of Philosophy thanked the Federal University Lokoja, his supervisors, lecturers, and examiners for their guidance and dedication throughout the academic journey, which began in 2021.
He further urged the management of the Federal University Lokoja to continue upholding its high academic standards, which have positioned it as one of Nigeria’s emerging centers of excellence in postgraduate education.
“I am deeply honored to have completed this rigorous academic pursuit at such a reputable institution. The insights gained from this journey will further enrich my contributions to governance and nation-building,” he stated.
This remarkable academic achievement underscores the growing synergy between scholarship and leadership, as Nigeria continues to navigate the complexities of national development.
