Residents Lament Alleged Quackery, Malpractice at Elebu Health Centre in Ibadan.

Residents of the Elebu community, located off Akala Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State, have raised serious concerns over what they describe as the growing presence of unqualified and inexperienced health workers at the government-owned Elebu Community Health Centre.

In an interview with Newsieevents health correspondent, a distressed resident who identified herself as “Mummy Olamide” recounted a troubling experience involving both herself and her child. She explained how her son fell ill and was taken to the health center, where tests allegedly indicated an “infection.” According to her, she was charged a fee, given injections for the child, and prescribed additional drugs from a pharmacy. Despite completing the treatment, her child’s condition did not improve.

“I also fell ill around the same time. Knowing the symptoms felt like malaria, I went for a test and was told again it was an infection the same thing I had reportedly been treated for just weeks earlier. After completing all treatments and spending heavily, my child and I still remained sick. Days later, the symptoms returned even worse,” she said.

She revealed that they later visited a nearby pharmacy for proper testing, where they were diagnosed with malaria and typhoid, not the recurring “infection” previously claimed at the Elebu center. Following the correct treatment, both she and her child recovered fully.

Mummy Olamide said her husband returned to the health center and spoke with other patients at least five of whom also reported being diagnosed with the same vague “infection.” Further investigation allegedly revealed that the health center’s testing equipment not in a good condition have been faulty or manipulated, always producing the same diagnosis result. The community health center was established to help the poor who cannot afford to visit hospital but this is horrible that health workers are not qualified medical personnels.

She also accused some staff at the facility of being unlicensed or unqualified, claiming they secured their positions through political connections rather than medical competence. One of the health workers allegedly offered to treat her at home for a large sum of money a proposal she declined.

“This is not just about money wasted. This is about life and death. Unqualified persons are handling public health in a government facility. It is unacceptable,” she lamented. “We are calling on the Ministry of Health and the Oyo State Government to urgently investigate the activities at the Elebu Health Centre before more lives are put at risk.”

She urged the state governor and the commissioner for health to carry out an immediate inspection of the center, calling for the retraining or removal of personnel who lack the necessary qualifications to handle patient.
