The Federal Government has dismissed speculations of a rift between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, amid growing rumours about the President possibly choosing a new running mate for the 2027 elections.
Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, addressed the issue during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, stating that the alleged feud was a fabrication by political speculators.
“There is no feud. It exists only in the imagination of those who want to create division,” Idris said. “I’ve seen the President and the Vice President together on multiple occasions, even very recently. They maintain a close and cordial relationship.”
Speculations had arisen following reports that Vice President Shettima was, at some point, allegedly barred from meeting with the President. Additionally, a recent endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term by the APC North-East leadership which omitted mention of Shettima sparked further rumors. The move prompted Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum to reportedly lead a protest over the Vice President’s exclusion.
Addressing the claims, the Minister clarified: “This is not an Atiku-Obasanjo scenario. President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima are on the same page. They are friends and political allies with a long history. The President has shown no indication of seeking to replace him.”
When asked about the possibility of Shettima not being on the ticket in 2027, Idris responded: “Who told you that? Did you hear Shettima’s name before he was picked in 2023? It is the President’s prerogative to choose his running mate, and he chose Shettima. They continue to work together seamlessly.”
Idris concluded by pointing out that Shettima frequently represents the President at official functions and continues to perform his duties without signs of discontent.
“Has Vice President Kashim Shettima ever told you he has issues with the President? The answer is no,” Idris emphasized.
