2027 Presidency: Wike says PDP not ready, urges party to rebuild for 2031.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has suggested that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may struggle to return to power in the 2027 general elections, citing what he described as weak and unfocused leadership within the party.

Wike made the remarks on Monday during his end-of-year media chat, where he argued that the PDP’s current leadership lacks commitment, direction, and the willingness to consider constructive advice.

According to him, the party should begin a deliberate rebuilding process with 2031 in view, rather than allowing internal challenges to further weaken its structure.

“We have a leadership that is not focused, a leadership that does not know what to do, and a leadership that does not consider suggestions,” Wike said. “If the leadership is committed, one should be able to admit mistakes and ask what went wrong and how to correct it.”

He stressed that winning elections goes beyond the desire to take over government, noting that effective positioning and strong leadership are essential for political success.

“By 2027, it is likely that we may not make it. But are we going to allow the party to die? Can’t we start rebuilding now ahead of 2031?” he asked.

The former Rivers State governor maintained that the PDP still has the capacity to bounce back and reclaim power if its leaders demonstrate genuine commitment and make the right decisions.

“There is nothing impossible once there is commitment. What is happening to my party today is what I predicted and warned against repeatedly. Leadership is critical in everything whether in associations or government. When leaders fail to make the right decisions, they must face the consequences,” Wike added.
