Former South African captain, Bongani Khumalo, has expressed surprise over Uche Ikpeazu’s decision to represent Uganda at senior international level instead of Nigeria.
Ikpeazu, who was born in London to a Nigerian father and a Ugandan mother, was eligible to play for three countries England, Nigeria, and Uganda. However, he ultimately pledged his international future to Uganda.
Speaking while on pundit duty with SuperSport during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Khumalo said he had expected the forward to choose Nigeria.
“I remember speaking with him; he has Nigerian and Ugandan roots,” Khumalo said. “So I was quite surprised he ended up playing for Uganda because I thought Nigeria would have been his natural choice.”
Ikpeazu is set to face Nigeria when Uganda take on the Super Eagles in their final Group C match in Fez.
The striker has already made it clear that Uganda are fully prepared to put up a strong fight against Nigeria as they chase a positive result in the tournament
