political shift, two Senators from Akwa Ibom State Sampson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South) and Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North-East) have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Their defection was formally announced during Wednesday’s plenary session by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read their respective letters on the Senate floor.
The lawmakers cited the ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP as their reason for abandoning the party. Their move adds to a growing wave of defections across the country, with some PDP chieftains opting to join the APC, while others have turned to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This development further intensifies the political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
