Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Special Duties, Ini Ememobong, has stepped down after Governor Umo Eno formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on his verified Facebook page on Friday, 6 June 2025, Ememobong revealed that he had submitted his resignation letter earlier in the day, obeying Governor Eno’s instruction that any appointee unwilling to follow him to the APC should exit the administration.

“While I respect the governor’s personal choice, I cannot embark on that journey,” he wrote, describing his decision as “politics with principles” rooted in his long-standing opposition to the APC.

Governor Eno’s switch to the APC ends months of speculation. On 22 May he had warned members of his cabinet to either cross over with him or vacate their posts. Ememobong is the first high-profile official to bow out rather than change party, underscoring the widening political rift triggered by the governor’s defection.
