Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term by leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as a desperate move rooted in fear.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, said the endorsement signals that the ruling party is panicking ahead of the 2027 general elections. The endorsement, announced during the APC National Summit held in Abuja last Friday, had backing from the APC Governors Forum and the leadership of the National Assembly.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio had boldly declared Tinubu as the sole presidential candidate for both the APC and Nigeria in the next election cycle.

Reacting through his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku dismissed the endorsement as irrelevant to the actual concerns of Nigerians. He argued that what truly matters is the approval of the Nigerian people, not internal party politics.

“When you’ve genuinely prepared for an exam, you rest easy knowing you’re ready. That’s our coalition’s stance,” Ibe said while addressing journalists in Abuja. “Nigerians will decide the outcome, not the backroom declarations of a party struggling to hold ground.”

Ibe went on to highlight the ongoing challenges facing the nation, accusing the Tinubu-led administration of neglecting urgent issues like insecurity, rising living costs, and deteriorating access to essential services.

“Insecurity is worsening, with insurgents reclaiming parts of Borno and other regions. Families are overwhelmed by the cost of food, education, and healthcare. Yet, rather than address these hardships, the government is focused on political theatrics,” he added.
