Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to restrain members of his family, particularly his son, Seyi Tinubu, over allegations of abuse of power.
Atiku’s remarks follow claims by the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Atiku Isah, who alleged that Seyi Tinubu was involved in his physical assault, abduction, and attempted inducement.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku described the allegations as alarming and a serious threat to democratic values and civil liberties. He warned that if the incident had resulted in death, it would have been considered among the atrocities committed by criminal elements, and the fact that it allegedly involves the President’s son makes it even more troubling.
“President Tinubu must take immediate steps to control the excesses of his family members, especially Seyi Tinubu, who seems intent on securing political allegiance for his father through coercive and violent means,” Atiku said.
He also expressed concern about reports suggesting that Seyi Tinubu may be exerting undue influence over top security officials, warning that such interference undermines state institutions and threatens national stability.
Atiku accused the Tinubu family of seeking to dominate student and civil society groups through intimidation, bribery, and force. He called on all well-meaning Nigerians to rise and defend democracy, reminding the President that leadership is a public mandate, not a personal inheritance.
He further dismissed any attempts to politically link him to the NANS President, describing such moves as baseless and desperate.
