The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election candidate, Adewale Murphy Olatunji, are facing public backlash after allegedly distributing sachet alcohol as part of their campaign souvenirs.
The gesture has drawn condemnation from residents and civic groups, who describe it as “an affront to the sensibilities of Ibadan North people” and a troubling reflection of the values guiding the party’s campaign. Critics say the choice of sachet alcohol is not only morally questionable but socially irresponsible, especially given growing concerns about substance abuse and its health consequences in the community.
“Of all the items they could have given, sachet alcohol was the worst choice,” one resident said. “It disrespects the culture and dignity of our people, and it’s sad our leaders think this is appropriate.”
Political analysts warn the move may backfire, with many voters interpreting it as a sign of APC’s disregard for the moral and social well-being of its constituents. The controversy has reignited discussions about the quality of leadership and representation the party and its candidate are offering.
