In a significant development in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), more prominent legal minds have officially joined his defense team.
Among the latest additions are renowned Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Paul Esokoro, and respected academic, Dr. P.K. Obi—both of whom were present in court today as proceedings got underway.
This update was shared by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, who remarked on X (formerly Twitter), “Breaking: PAUL ESOKORO (SAN) and Dr. P.K. Obi (an accomplished academic) have joined the ever-expanding legal team of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. They’re both present in Court today & proceedings are ongoing. The more, the merrier.”
Today’s session, according to Ejimakor, is expected to see the prosecution continue laying out its case through witness testimony.
However, he hinted that time constraints may lead to another adjournment, as cross-examination might not take place today.
This comes just days after four other distinguished SANs—Prof. Onyechi Ikpeazu, Emeka Etiaba, Mela Audu Nunghe, and Joseph Akubo—were also announced as new members of Kanu’s legal defense team, signaling a fortified front as the trial progresses.
Kanu is facing terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice James Omotosho. So far, two witnesses have testified against him, presenting recorded broadcasts as part of the prosecution’s case.
