Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized the urgent need for constitutional reform in Nigeria, stressing that the country’s supreme law must genuinely reflect its unique history, diverse population, and the aspirations of its people.
Speaking candidly, Obasanjo stated, “A nation’s Constitution, as the fundamental law, must reflect the history, the constituents, and the aspirations of its people. It must be sacrosanct. From my experience with our Constitution, I can confidently identify several areas that require urgent amendments.”
However, he warned that constitutional reform alone would not solve Nigeria’s problems unless accompanied by a fundamental change in the attitude and character of its leaders.
“No matter the changes made to the Constitution, if those who have been operating it for the past decade and a half remain in charge and continue their current ways, the welfare and well-being of Nigerians will keep being sacrificed. Selfishness, corruption, impunity, and a blatant disregard for the Constitution, decency, morality, and integrity will persist,” Obasanjo lamented.
He called for a new leadership culture grounded in accountability, honesty, and the genuine service of the Nigerian people.
