Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has cautioned that the party risks losing the August 8, 2026 governorship election in Osun State if it fails to field a credible and experienced candidate.
Omisore made the remark on Wednesday during consultation visits to party members in Osogbo and Olorunda local government areas. He emphasized that only a candidate with proven experience in elective office could deliver victory for the party.
According to him, several stakeholders have urged him to join the 2026 governorship race, insisting that his participation is necessary to challenge what they described as the “poor performance” of the incumbent administration.
“If we fail to give a viable aspirant the ticket, we will fail and lose,” Omisore stated. “We must consider an aspirant who has held an elective position. The governorship should not be left to the free will of an individual.”
He further warned against selecting a candidate based on personal ties rather than competence. “Governorship should not be given based on friendship. You should not hire your friend for a job he can’t deliver.”
Omisore appealed to party members for support ahead of the APC primary scheduled for December 13, 2025, urging them to rally behind him.
“I want to charge all of us that on the 13th of December, we should troop out and show love to me by choosing me as the party’s candidate,” he said.
The Consultation Coordinator, Ajibola Famurewa, expressed optimism about Omisore’s chances, noting the warm reception received across local government areas visited.
“Every local government we have visited has shown overwhelming acceptance. I am confident that Senator Omisore will emerge as the APC flag bearer on December 13,” Famurewa said.
