PDP remains strong despite defections — Sowunmi

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed strong confidence in the party’s ability to withstand the wave of defections affecting it.

Speaking on recent developments, Sowunmi dismissed concerns over members leaving the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC), questioning the widespread alarm about the situation. “Why wouldn’t the PDP survive?” he asked rhetorically.

He explained that political movements are not one-sided, as some politicians are also joining the PDP and other parties. Sowunmi emphasized that top positions in any party are limited, leading to inevitable shifts. “There’s only one presidential ticket per party. Can everyone who wants to be president run under the APC? The answer is no. Likewise, there’s only one governorship ticket per state, so not everyone can find room in one party,” he said.

Highlighting the broader dynamics of political realignment, Sowunmi warned against hasty political conclusions, stressing that the next general election is still far off. “It’s too early to start making predictions about who will go or stay,” he cautioned.

He reaffirmed his faith in the PDP’s resilience, citing its well-established structures at both the state and local government levels.
