… Amaechi, Peter Obi, and others accused of sponsoring Jimbo against senate president.
By our Reporter.
A fierce political battle is shaping up in Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District, also known as Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, as Senator Godswill Akpabio, the current President of the Senate, faces what could be his toughest re-election bid yet in 2027.
Emerging reports indicate that Hon. Clement Jimbo, the current Member of the House of Representatives for Abak Federal Constituency, is preparing to challenge Akpabio for the Senate seat. Sources close to the camp of Jimbo say he is gaining strong backing from influential political figures across party lines.
Among those reportedly throwing their weight behind Jimbo are former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as well as Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi. The coalition of anti-Akpabio elements is said to be determined to unseat the Senate President, regardless of the political cost.
One of the aides to the federal house member also confided in us that strategic meetings are ongoing between Jimbo and key figures within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Abuja, indicating a broader plan to challenge Akpabio’s political dominance in the district. Senator John James Akpanudoedehe, who is believed to be preparing a governorship bid under the ADC banner, is reportedly part of this alliance, positioning for a joint effort to upend both Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno’s hold on power in the state.
Efforts to reach Hon. Clement Jimbo for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report. However, credible sources reveal that the lawmaker is currently on a tour within his federal constituency, reportedly engaging youth groups and community leaders as part of what has been subtly described as a “walk show” an initiative aimed at showcasing his performance while quietly promoting his Senate ambition.
