A major political shift may be underway as a coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of a new political party – the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).
The application, submitted on June 19 and acknowledged by INEC on Friday, reflects the coalition’s intention to establish a new national platform ahead of the next general elections.
Prominent figures backing the proposed party include former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Dr. Umar Ardo, convener of the League of Northern Democrats and former aide to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. The initiative, according to insiders, is designed to harness growing public dissatisfaction and political realignments in a bid to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s hold on power.
The coalition’s formal request was conveyed in a letter jointly signed by Chief Akin A. Rickets (Protem National Chairman) and Abdullahi Elayo (Protem National Secretary).
Part of the letter reads:
“We respectfully write to the Independent National Electoral Commission, requesting the registration of our association, the All Democratic Alliance, as a political party. This is a sequel to the decision taken by the Nigerian National Coalition Group to sponsor our association for full registration.”
The group also submitted all required documents, including the party’s constitution, manifesto, minutes of founding meetings, and its official logo. The proposed party symbol features a maize cob, which the founders say symbolizes abundance, resilience, and sustenance core values the ADA seeks to promote. The party’s slogan is “Justice for All.”
This move comes days after INEC reminded aspiring political groups of the need to strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and electoral guidelines, emphasizing that no political sentiment or pressure would substitute due process.
