The Kaduna State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding the case involving Farida Isiak, a journalist with Nagarta Radio, following reports alleging her arbitrary arrest, detention and hasty sentencing.

The Command, through its spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said in a statement on Thursday that the publication portraying the incident as an attempt to silence the media did not present the full circumstances of the case.

According to the police, the matter stemmed from a Facebook post allegedly made by the journalist containing statements directed at the Nigeria Police Force, the officer involved and his family.

The Command explained that the dispute reportedly followed a disagreement between the parties after a request made by the journalist, adding that the incident should be assessed objectively and in its proper context.

It cautioned against interpreting the matter solely as an attempt to suppress press freedom without a comprehensive examination of the facts.

“In the spirit of mutual respect, professionalism, and the cordial relationship between the Kaduna State Police Command and members of the media, the Commissioner of Police personally intervened to facilitate an amicable resolution of the matter yesterday.

“The Command, however, expresses concern over publications that condemn the Police without adequate verification of the facts or efforts to obtain the Command’s position. Such reporting risks presenting an incomplete or misleading account of events and may unfairly damage the reputation of the Police and the individuals involved,” the statement said.

The police consequently urged media organisations and journalists to adhere to the principles of accuracy, fairness, balance and responsible reporting.

Hassan said allegations should be properly verified and all parties involved given a reasonable opportunity to present their sides before publication.

The Command maintained that these standards were necessary to strengthen public confidence, encourage constructive engagement and promote mutual respect between law enforcement agencies and the media.

It also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, safeguarding citizens’ constitutional rights and maintaining a professional working relationship with journalists.

While acknowledging the essential role of the press in a democratic society, the police stressed that freedom of expression should be exercised responsibly, with consideration for the rights and reputations of others and in accordance with applicable laws.

The Command assured media practitioners and other stakeholders of its continued willingness to engage constructively in the interest of peace, security and justice in Kaduna State.
