Four people have died and 16 others sustained injuries after a container truck overturned onto an interstate Toyota Hiace bus on Berger Bridge, inward Eleko, along the Ibeju-Lekki Expressway in Lagos State.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, October 28, 2026, when an articulated truck conveying a 20-foot container collided with the bus, bearing registration number GME-589 ZU.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement, said preliminary findings indicated that the truck was travelling up the bridge at excessive speed when the incident occurred.
The driver reportedly lost control while trying to avoid a collision, causing the truck and its container to overturn onto the passenger bus.
“The impact was severe and tragically resulted in the loss of four (4) adult males who were confirmed dead at the scene, while sixteen (16) other adult males sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the statement said.
Following a distress call, LASEMA deployed its Beta Whales Team from the Epe Base to the scene. The team worked alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigeria Police Force to secure the area, provide first aid to the injured and evacuate them to Epe General Hospital for treatment.
The agency said a private crane had been secured to lift the overturned truck and container, allowing emergency personnel to safely recover the bodies of the deceased.
LASEMA added that recovery operations were ongoing and traffic control measures had been introduced to protect road users and manage movement around the crash site.
The Lagos State Government expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
In separate incidents on Wednesday, LASEMA also responded to road accidents in Agege and Igando, although no fatalities were recorded in either case.
At about 4:09 am, the agency’s Tiger Team from C3 Base responded to an accident near Vetland School, inward Agege Pen Cinema, along Old Abeokuta Road.
Responders found a truck with registration number KTU-940XT that had crashed into a solar-powered streetlight pole before mounting the road median and obstructing traffic.
Preliminary findings suggested that reckless driving caused the incident. While no one was reported injured, the crash damaged the streetlight pole and the front section of the truck.
LASEMA said it diverted traffic to prevent further incidents and ease congestion. After its heavy-duty recovery equipment, Elephant, arrived, the truck was removed and taken to Abattoir Police Station for investigation and safekeeping. The road was subsequently cleared and reopened to motorists.
In Igando, the agency’s Beta Team responded to a collision involving a DAF truck, with registration number SMK 795 XY, and a Toyota Corolla, registered as AKD 169 EA, at Lanre Bus Stop, inward Igando, along LASU-Igando Road.
According to LASEMA, information gathered at the scene indicated that a broken-down truck on the opposite side of the road had caused traffic to build up. The DAF truck was reportedly driving against traffic when it collided with the Corolla.
The collision blocked half of the road inward Igando. Although no death was recorded, the Corolla driver sustained a minor head injury and was taken to Igando General Hospital by an associate.
The agency said the Corolla had been towed to Igando Police Station, while its heavy-duty recovery equipment, Super Metro, was deployed to move the DAF truck to a lay-by and restore normal traffic flow. The operation was still ongoing at the time of the report.
The Lagos State Government, under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through continued investment in emergency management.
It also commended LASEMA and its partner agencies, including the police and FRSC, for their prompt response to the accidents.
Motorists were urged to obey speed limits, avoid driving against traffic and other dangerous manoeuvres, and ensure their vehicles were in good mechanical condition before embarking on journeys.
Residents were also encouraged to report emergencies through the state’s toll-free emergency lines.
