On Wednesday, some operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) surrounded Bello’s residence in Abuja.

However, the current governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, intervened to prevent the EFCC operatives from arresting the former governor.

Ododo’s team escorted Bello away from the location in the governor’s vehicle.

Bello was also absent from court earlier on Thursday when the EFCC brought charges against him.

His arraignment followed a court order granting the EFCC a warrant of arrest and an enrolment order on Wednesday. Subsequently, the agency declared Bello wanted for an alleged financial crime amounting to N80.2 billion.

The commission issued a bulletin requesting anyone with information about his whereabouts to report to the Commission or the nearest police station.

SaharaReporters previously reported how the EFCC instructed all security agencies to place Bello on their watch list to prevent him from leaving the country through any borders.

In response to the EFCC’s directive, the Nigeria Immigration Service circulated an internal circular directing its area and zonal commands to arrest Bello if spotted. The circular mentioned that the former Kogi governor was under investigation, and there were concerns that he might attempt to leave the country to avoid scrutiny.

“VERY URGENT PLEASE!!! I am directed to request you to place the above named subject on watch list with immediate effect.  Subject has resisted arrest and arraignment therefore he may run out of the country anytime. Please accept the assurances of the CGIS’s warmest regards and esteem,” it read.

Copied in circular are the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Inspector General of Police and others.
