A community leader in Taraba State, King Eltopzy, has warned against the politicisation of insecurity, insisting that the protection of lives and property must take precedence over political interests.
Eltopzy gave the warning on Tuesday while announcing the apprehension of a suspected member of an armed robbery group allegedly operating in the Shavoh and Yagai areas of the state.
According to a statement by the community leader, the operation also led to the recovery of a motorcycle allegedly stolen from his residence, alongside two air conditioners reportedly stolen within the community.
He assured residents that efforts would continue to identify criminal elements and strengthen security across Shavoh and neighbouring communities.
Eltopzy called on residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, stressing that collective action was necessary to tackle criminal activities and protect the community.
He expressed concern over attempts by some individuals to turn security-related developments into political controversies, alleging that certain persons were exploiting the situation to promote the interests of their preferred political candidates rather than supporting efforts to address the problem.
“Community security is beyond politics. The safety of our people must never be sacrificed on the altar of political desperation,” he said.
The community leader also raised concerns about the circulation of unverified information surrounding security incidents, urging residents and political actors to establish the facts before sharing reports that could heighten tension or mislead the public.
He maintained that addressing insecurity required responsible public discussions, cooperation with relevant security agencies and a shared commitment to finding lasting solutions.
“The community needs responsible dialogue, cooperation with relevant security agencies and collective commitment to addressing security challenges,” he said.
Eltopzy further urged residents to report suspicious movements and activities to the appropriate authorities, while allowing security personnel to carry out their responsibilities professionally and in accordance with the law.
He reiterated the importance of peace and security in Taraba State, calling on community members to put aside political differences and work together towards creating a safer environment for residents.
The community leader’s appeal comes amid continuing concerns over insecurity in parts of the country, with renewed calls for community participation, credible information and cooperation between residents and security agencies in tackling criminal activities.
