****ASUU Strike: Students suffer, not Government

The need for federal government to review the standard of education in Nigeria has once again been emphsized.
Dr. Ukpong a staff to a multinational company stated this during the send forth party in honour of the passing out pupils of Tower of Ivory Elementary schools and said that even the blind could see the steady decline in every facets of our educational system.
It is often said that education is the strongest base for individual or societal growth. This, unfortunately, seem unrealistic in Nigeria.
Dr. Ukpong who was the Chairman of the occasion while speaking to some journalists after the event said, there are many ways of improving, nurturing and reviving the quality of education in Nigeria. The Government should take salient actions that would reverse the pathetic situations of government-owned schools.
The neglect suffered by many Nigerian students who are in public tertiary institutions cannot be overemphasised.
NIGERIA is among the few nations in the world where academic calendar is often disrupted at any time either because of strike, riot or some unnecessary interference by the powers that be.
He said the most uncertain thing in Nigeria is the duration it takes a student to complete an ordinary degree programme. That is one of the reasons most rich men send their children abroad, where they are sure of uninterrupted academic calendar. The poor ones have no choice!
The fact that other nations are not embarking on prolonged strikes does not mean they don’t have issues with their government but they have a better and more civilized ways of resolving their disputes. They also have a listening governments.
Unfortunately, most Nigerian leaders are not just deaf to strike and other forms of agitations, their conscience seems to be completely dead to people’s plight. Take for instance, how can a minister for Education picked a presidential nomination form when strike is going on and he is not removed from office.
While briefing journalists on the indefinite strike embarked by ASSU, said children that are passing out from SS3 who probably might have taken jamb have to wait until ASSU end their strike for the previous set to round up so there can be space. According to him, such is unhealthy in the Democratic desensitisation.
He commended the management of Tower of Ivory schools Nigeria headed by the retired deputy inspector General of police Udom Ekpoudom as the chairman board of Governors for introducing standards of education in the private sector.
