Promoting dignity and hygiene: Abak chairman distributes first lady’s donation to female students.

The Executive Chairman of Abak Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs. Ime Effiong Charles, on Friday, May 29, 2026, distributed sanitary pads donated by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to female students in selected secondary schools across Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The initiative, aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene and supporting the education of the girl child, benefited students from seven secondary schools within the local government area. The beneficiary schools included Model Girls School, Ikot Ekang Abak; Comprehensive Secondary School, Midim; Christian Secondary School, Ukpom Abak; Comprehensive Secondary School, Ediene Abak; Community High School, Ikwek Afahaobong; The Church of Jesus Christ Comprehensive Secondary School, Atai Otoro Abak; and MC Intire Secondary Commercial School, Utu Abak.

Speaking during the distribution exercise, Hon. Ime Charles commended the First Lady for her unwavering commitment to the welfare and development of young girls across the country. She explained that Senator Oluremi Tinubu directed that the sanitary pads be distributed to female students in selected schools and disclosed that forty students were selected from each beneficiary school.

According to the Chairman, each student received one dozen sanitary pads containing twelve pieces, which are expected to adequately serve their menstrual hygiene needs for approximately one year. In addition to the sanitary pads, the Chairman also presented cash support to the beneficiary schools as part of her administration’s commitment to educational development and student welfare.

The gesture was met with excitement and appreciation from students, teachers, and school administrators across the beneficiary institutions.

At Comprehensive Secondary School, Midim, the Senior Prefect for Girls, Miss Ruth Aniefiok Silas, expressed gratitude to the First Lady and the Council Chairman for remembering female students, praying for God’s continued blessings upon them.

Similarly, at Community High School, Ikwek Afahaobong, the Senior Prefect, Miss Destiny Kubiat Eshiet, thanked the donors for the thoughtful intervention and prayed for greater achievements in their service to humanity. The Principal General of the school, Mr. George Brendan Umoren, described the donation as timely and impactful, noting that many female students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds would greatly benefit from the support.

At Comprehensive Secondary School, Ediene Abak, Principal General Mr. OduduAbasi Oswim Akpan lauded the First Lady’s magnanimity, stressing that the donation would significantly improve menstrual hygiene among students and encourage proper sanitary practices. He also praised Hon. Ime Charles for her motherly disposition and dedication to the welfare of students in Abak.

The Principal General of The Church of Jesus Christ Comprehensive Secondary School, Atai Otoro, Mrs. E. Akpanubo, expressed delight over the intervention, stating that it would ease the burden on both parents and the school in providing sanitary materials for female students.

At MC Intire Secondary Commercial School, Utu Abak, students including Doris Eric William, Assistant Senior Prefect, and Salvation Akpan of SS2, expressed appreciation for what they described as a show of love and concern for the wellbeing of young girls. The Principal General, Mrs. Patricia Ubong Emah, commended Senator Oluremi Tinubu for prioritizing the welfare of the girl child and prayed for divine strength and wisdom for her to continue impacting lives.

The distribution exercise further demonstrated the commitment of both the First Lady and the Abak Local Government administration to improving the welfare, health, and educational opportunities of young girls.
