Non-academic staff of Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, have issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government to implement the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA), warning that failure to meet the demand would trigger a total and indefinite strike.

The ultimatum was contained in a communiqué issued by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), TSU branch, following an emergency congress meeting held on Thursday.

The union expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the government’s prolonged delay in implementing the allowance, despite several committee meetings and assurances.

According to SSANU, its members had remained patient while awaiting the fulfilment of an agreement between the Federal Government and the association, but regretted that the prolonged engagement had produced no positive outcome.

The association said the 14-day notice was intended to give the state government an opportunity to implement the allowance and avert an industrial crisis that could disrupt activities at the university.

SSANU also pointed to the implementation of the agreement in other state-owned universities, including Adamawa State University, Mubi; Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi; Gombe State University; Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Kwara State University, Malete; Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti; and Osun State University, Osogbo.

The communiqué was signed by the branch Chairperson, Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka, and Secretary, Offen Stephen Noseh, on behalf of the association.
