Irish music legend , Sinead O’Connor dies at 56 after years of mental health battles and 18 months after her 17-year-old son Shane also passed away

Irish music icon Sinead O’Connor passed away at age 56 following years of struggles with her mental health.

The singer’s family released the following statement: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the demise of our darling Sinéad. Her family and friends are inconsolable and have asked for privacy during this extremely trying time.

A year has passed since her son Shane, then 17, committed suicide in January 2022 after escaping the hospital while under suicide watch.

The performer, whose name was changed to Shuhada’ Sadaqat in 2018 when she embraced Islam, was thought to divide her time between London and Co Roscommon, Ireland, at the time of her death.

 

O’Connor last tweeted a picture of Shane and said: ‘Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul.

‘We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally.

 

‘I am lost in the bardo without him.’

Ms. O’Connor is survived by her three children. Her son, Shane, died last year aged 17.
