2027: FCT Igbo monarch demands fair political representation, credible elections.

By Divine Sam.

The traditional ruler of the Igbo community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, Eze Ibe Nwosu, has called for fair political representation and credible elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.

Nwosu urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct elections that are free, fair and transparent, insisting that the final results must reflect the genuine choice of Nigerians.

The monarch made the appeal on Sunday during the 2026 New Yam Festival, popularly known as Iriji, organised by the Igbo community in Abuja to celebrate a successful harvest and preserve its cultural heritage.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum, Nwosu encouraged Igbo residents in the FCT to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and exercise their voting rights without fear, intimidation or any form of pressure.

He emphasised that active participation in the electoral process was essential to ensuring that Nigerians elect leaders committed to public welfare, national development and the interests of the people.

The monarch, who previously served as Supervisory Councillor for Health in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), also stressed the importance of justice and equity in the distribution of political power.

He called on relevant authorities to ensure that every group has a fair opportunity to participate in the country’s democratic process, regardless of its background or place of origin.

Beyond politics, Nwosu appealed to Igbo residents to sustain peaceful relationships with their neighbours and host communities, noting that mutual respect, tolerance and peaceful coexistence remain essential for unity and development.

Speaking on the importance of the New Yam Festival, he described the celebration as an opportunity to express gratitude for a bountiful harvest while showcasing the rich cultural traditions of the Igbo people.

“Today, we have come to celebrate the God of harvest and showcase Igbo culture,” he said.

He urged members of the community to continue promoting peace and harmony with their host communities while preserving the cultural values that unite them.

The monarch’s appeal comes as political activities begin to build ahead of the 2027 general elections, with growing calls for inclusive representation, electoral transparency and greater citizen participation across the country.
