EndSARS Protest: African Church primate condemns violence, sues for peaceful demonstration

By Divine Sam
The Primate of the African Church His Eminence, Dr. Emmanuel Udofia has condemned in totality the mayhem unleashed by certain groups of youths who paraded as peaceful EndSARS protesters for the past two weeks in the country.
The prelate also expressed concern over the loss of lives in various parts of the country as a result of the protests and pray that God will console the affected families.
In Akwa Ibom State, he said: “peaceful protest ” on Thursday snowballed into unprecedented violence, unquantifiable destruction, massive looting, and loss of lives and properties.
This barbaric act is viewed as a blatant violation of basic laws of human freedom, peace, right to life, and possession of properties by the perpetrators.
Prelate Emmanuel Udofia while frowning against the Thursday, 22nd October 2020 episode of the EndSARS protesters in Akwa Ibom state, that suddenly escalated out of proportion, as dangerous weapons and people were employed and used against unsuspecting law-abiding citizens of the State also regretted that the real protest has been hijacked by some political hoodlums and thereby politizing what was supposed to be a peaceful protest.
The African Church primates noted that the hoodlums that hijacked the protest have eventually led to the destruction of private and public assets as well as gruesome murdering of innocent people including one of the senior officers of our Church the African Church Elder Iniobong Lyons who was shot on his way back from an emergency Diocesan Council meeting held at St Michael’s Cathedral, Four Towns, Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.

The African Church primate Bishop Udofia expressed serious pains and sadness on the sudden departure of Elder Lyons, who until his untimely death was bubbling with life and good health.
The church passionately appeals to the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the situation and come out with the true position that would help the Judicial Panel of Inquiry into cases of Human Rights Abuses in Akwa Ibom State investigate those behind this dastardly act with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.
In view of this, primate Udofia called on the African Church to appeal to the youths of Akwa Ibom State to avoid the temptation of being used as tools for violence, to destroy the gains of the years especially the celebrated peaceful atmosphere the State is known for; they should consider the enormous and immeasurable repercussions of violence and desist forthwith.
He further beckons on parents and guardians to caution their adult children against destroying private and public assets. “We also appeal to youths to discontinue the protest to curb infiltration and being hijacked by hoodlums. We are all Akwa Ibomites, we should not destroy the wishes of the present administration, rather we should join hands with Governor Udom Emmanuel to build the Akwa Ibom State of our dream,” he said.
