Idem Advocates Appointment Of A’Ibom Royal Fathers As Federal Varsities Governing Council Chairmen

The member for Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives has called on the Federal government to appoint  traditional rulers in Akwa Ibom as chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal tertiary  institutions as obtained in other parts of the country.

Rep. Unyime Idem made the advocacy recently at the coronation of Obong Mandu Onono, village head of Ikot Osukpong,Ndot Clan in Oruk Anam Local Government Area.

The lawmaker explained that Akwa Ibom has revered and intelligent members of the traditional institution who were poised to bring their quota and experience to bear in the stability of Nigerian educational institutions.

The deputy chairman, communications committee in the House pointed out that only a handful of traditional rulers from Akwa Ibom have been appointed  chairmen, Governing Council of  Federal universities since the creation of the state, stressing that as it was obtained in other parts of the country,  such infraction should be addressed.

Idem maintained that traditional rulers in the state have contributed significantly to the maintenance of peace, unity and harmonious coexistence which necessitated rapid transformation of society,  arguing that such knowledge If harnessed would go a long way to invigorate the custodian of peoples’ traditions and customs into educational advancement of Nigerian universities.

He promised to work with his colleagues in the National Assembly to make policies and programmes that would continue to accord premium to the traditional institution.

“One of the ways of contributing towards solving the imbalance is to join in formulating legislations to promote traditional institution in Akwa Ibom so that the same recognition accorded other parts of the country can also be accorded Akwa Ibom royal fathers,” Idem emphasised.

He, however, called on his constituents to continue to accord due honour and recognition to the royal fathers and used the avenue to intimate the people of his plans to empower 1500 constituents by December this year to enable them become self- dependent.

He said in line with his support for the completion agenda of Gov Udom Emmanuel  administration,  he would ensure that public secondary schools benefit from the ICT programme to further launch students of the federal constituency into the ICT revolution.

At the coronation presided over by the paramount ruler of Oruk Anam Local Government Area, Akuku Johnson Johnny Obosi, Idem  was presented with the chieftaincy title of Atang Anam 1 (Talk and Do) of Oruk Anam in view of his promised keeping approaches to the representation of the Federal constituency.
