Military Court Demotes Ex-Lafiya Dole Commander, Adeniyi Over Leaked Video

By Newsie:-

Former Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Olusegun Adeniyi has been convicted and demoted at least for three years by a military court in Abuja.

Recall that sometime in March, Adeniyi, a major-general, made a video that went viral on social media and made news headlines after his troop was fiercely attacked by Boko haram.
In the video, he complained about the lack of weapons for troops fighting Boko Haram in the north-east causing him to lose some men in the fight.

Afterward, he was removed as commander of Operation Lafiya Dole and transferred to the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja.

He was later moved to the army headquarters, still in Abuja, and made to face a court-martial, a legal proceeding for military officers, similar to a civilian court trial.

During this period, the army claimed that Adeniyi’s redeployment is a routine exercise intended to reinvigorate the system.

However, on Monday, in its ruling on the matter, the military tribunal found Adeniyi guilty of violating military social media guidelines and ordered that he be demoted by at least three years.

Found guilty also was Tokunbo Obanla, Adeniyi’s military aide, who was prosecuted alongside the general, and sentenced to 28 days in jail with hard labour.

Obanla reportedly admitted to mistakenly posting the video on social media as he was the one in possession of Adeniyi’s phone at the time of the incident.
Both convictions still require confirmation by the military board before they can take effect.

Adeniyi’s lawyers said they will appeal against the tribunal judgment before higher military authorities.
