The House of Representatives has decided to put an end to sports betting in the nation and has called on the National Lottery Regulatory Commission (NLRC) to adhere to the Lottery Regulatory Commission Act of 2005.
This decision was made after a motion put forward by Rep. Kelechi Nwogu (PDP-Rivers) was adopted during a session in Abuja on Thursday, February 15.
Nwogu stated that the inadequate oversight of sports betting has led to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and addiction. He also mentioned that it had also led to strain or broken relationships due to lying or stealing from friends and family, financial problems, legal issues, and job loss due to excessive loss or debt.
“Betting has given rise to increased crime rate and eventual suicide,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of campaigns aimed at preventing the adverse social effects of lottery involvement and underage participation.
In accepting the proposal, the House called upon the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation to organize a thorough nationwide campaign to educate the public about the detrimental consequences of youth engagement in sports betting.
Additionally, the House tasked the Committee on Inter-Governmental Affairs with conducting a Public Hearing on the harmful impacts of sports betting in Nigeria. The committee was instructed to submit its findings to the House within four weeks for additional legislative measures.
